4.0 out of 5 stars Great trail bike, but not competition level, September 19, 2010

I've had my Blackcomb for two and a half years. I've changed out the knobbies for street treads, put on a more comfortable seat, and a set of raised handlebars, essentially making a hybrid bike out of it. For what it is, a non-pro bike, it's been great. It has push shifters that have only required occasional adjustment, and disc brakes that work surprisingly well. The only problem I had with the brakes was when I tried adjusting them myself without reading the manual. Clean and reseat the pads and give them time to break in again and they work fine. The suspension works, as in it's not the bouncing springing feeling a lot of cheap bikes have, and it tracks straight.

It handles well, although I don't use it for much off road other than traveling down gravel roads, and the suspension and wide range of gears is nice for hills and bumps. Yes, it is a "store bike" and in the eyes of the serious mountain bike crowd therefore not worthy of consideration; it's certainly... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Bike I've Ever Owned, February 22, 2012
This review is from: Mongoose Men's Blackcomb Bicycle (Silver) (Sports)
This bike was actually a gift to me from a friend of mine who rarely used it in the two years that he owned it. Collectively he put on maybe 100 miles within that time frame. I mentioned I wanted to do a 340 mile bike ride from my friends in Swanton Vermont to my home in NY, NY. He volunteered to give me the bike, knowing I used to ride a 20 inch Mongoose freestyle bike.

At first it was a weird experience getting on something with both front and rear suspension coming from a bike with a smaller solid frame. I've ridden bikes with suspension in the past and expected this bike to be "squishy and springy" like the others I've ridden before. Far FAR FAR from that. The first test ride on the bike felt a little loose and a quick turn on the suspension changed that right away. It's a solid ride with some give just to absorb the impact of regular street riding.

I've added so much to the bike since getting it, spending in excess of $200 in accessories thus far and I'm... Read more
